UConn hadn't played a football game in 637 days, but they picked up where they left off…not being able to tackle, defensive breakdowns, errant throws and all the things that we have seen too often for too long.
UConn's defense, which was almost historically bad in 2018 and 2019, has a long ways to go.
UConn has not won a game since a 56-35 win over UMass on October 26, 2019.
Sophomore Jack Zergiotis got the start at quarterback, but was 12-of-24 for only 61 yards. Sophomore Steven Krajewski replaced him late and finished 2-of-6 for 11 yards.
The conventional approach to establish the run and keep their defense rested in the 110-degree heat went nowhere. As a team, UConn rushed for 35 yards on 31 attempts. Senior Kevin Mensah rushed for 31 yards on 11 carries. The only "bright spot" was Mensah moved into fifth place in the career rushing list at UConn.
Sophomore Cameron Ross had five receptions for 37 yards.
UConn was out-gained 538-107.
"That, of course, wasn't the outcome we were looking for," UConn head coach Randy Edsall said. "There were things that I liked, but there just wasn't enough of those things."
