The Train Depot

My small town has many historic buildings.  One that I haven't shown before is the train depot.  As you will notice, the above photo is a bit blurry.  That is what happens when you try to use your husband's phone for photos.

The original depot was built in 1879 and the Cumberland & Ohio Railroad laid tracks at that time.  The original building was replaced in 1913 and it is the one standing today.

The building retains original details, woodwork, ticket window, and loading dock.  The city does rent it out for small functions.

Although tracks were laid to my small town, they didn't run through the county.  There was a dispute with the C & O Railroad and the people of the county felt like they were cheated as the tracks only went halfway.  The railroad tax was not paid and it ended up with the sheriff resigning.  This all occurred in 1879 and my small town remained the end of the line for the train.

This is an historical photo of an area that was used as a turntable for trains next to the depot.  Nothing remains of it today.

The last freight train ran to my town in 1979.

The last passenger train ran in 1958.
